The best art taps into something deep. There is truth in art, like there is truth in math – nature – the world. Art is a universal language. There are no words; but we understand.
Visual art, like music, can have a rhythm. I like the way ocean waves splash on a canvas, or how crosshatched lines on paper form a face, or how the swing of a hammer against a point chisel knocks off a chunk of marble – gradually revealing a figure within. Art has rhythm, movement, a sense of time or timelessness. I sometimes find myself lost in art – trying to capture a moment – oblivious to everything except that glob of paint hanging from the tip of a brush in the second before it touches the canvas.
